Marquis Scott is the assistant head of school at The Lawrenceville School. He is an experienced independent school leader with more than two decades experience of partnering with school leaders across the country in equity and inclusion, strategic planning, community wellbeing, and distributing leadership initiatives. Marquis is an influential and visionary leader who brings a unique perspective in applying a systems thinking approach to independent school leadership and governance, which is exemplified in his winter 2023 article published by the National Association of Independent Schools, “All Systems Go.” The article focuses on a critical re-framing of strategic planning through a systems-thinking approach that ensures schools systematically, deliberately, and creatively prepare for the future.
In addition to his role as the assistant head of school, Marquis has successfully undertaken various acting leadership positions at The Lawrenceville School, including chief technology officer, director of communications and external affairs, dean of diversity, inclusion, and community engagement, and director of human resources. Currently, he leads a student-centered Wellness Team, working collaboratively with the medical director, dean of students, and dean of campus well-being to prioritize a holistic approach to student well-being. Marquis’s work is driven by a deep passion for teaching and learning, school operations, equity and inclusion, and the development of best practices for fostering meaningful and purposeful relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Marquis holds an M.B.A. from Rutgers University’s School of Business, an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University, a B.A. in Economics and Computer Science from Union College, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management from Drexel University. He also completed the National Association of Independent Schools’ Fellowship for Aspiring School Heads, is an alumnus of the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and served as Vice Chair of the Hotchkiss Board of Governors from May 2021-June 2024. Currently, he serves on the boards of the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS) and Leadership + Design.
