  • Cashless Society: Most places accept Apple Pay and cards
  • Cash: Still useful for taxis (non-app based) and small vendors in local markets (souks).

  • Rideshares: Uber and Careem are widely available in major cities like Riyadh. 
  • Taxis: Metered, but less convenient. 
  • Public Transport: Still developing. Riyadh Metro is partially operational. Most expats rely on private cars or rideshares.

  • Modest Clothing is Expected:
    • Women: No longer required to wear abayas (robe-like garments), but modest dress is still expected. Bring a scarf for visits to religious sites.
    • Men: Avoid shorts in formal settings. Long pants and covered shoulders are the norm.

  • Prayer Times Matter: Some shops and services pause during the five daily prayers. Be patient and plan around them.
  • No PDA: Public displays of affection are generally not permitted and are considered inappropriate.
  • Gender Norms: Respect separate sections for families and genders in some restaurants or waiting areas.
  • Ramadan: Don’t eat, drink, or chew gum in public during daylight hours. Many restaurants open only after sunset.

  • Tap Water: Bottled water is recommended.
  • Food: International options are everywhere.
  • Alcohol: Banned - don’t try to bring it in or ask for it.

  • Tipping: Not expected but appreciated - 10% in restaurants is acceptable.
  • ATMs: Widely available; most accept foreign cards.
