  • Better Decision-Making Under Pressure: Evidence-Based Practices to Support Admissions Work
Admissions work requires sustained attention and sound judgment. When we are processing large numbers of applications, interviews, and committee discussions in quick succession, the brain naturally relies on cognitive shortcuts. Much as we aim for equity and consistency in our admissions decisions, the pace and stakes of our work (the sense of time urgency, the high volume of applications, the pressure to fill seats) can amplify multiple forms of bias if we don’t account for them.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the nervous system conditions that lead to increased cognitive biases and try out a series of micro-practices that help cultivate greater balance and curiosity in our decision-making. We may not be able to significantly slow the volume or timeline of applications, but we can employ these practical, in-the-moment strategies to help us slow down our thinking, keep our assumptions in check, and ultimately live up to the important mission of our offices.
