Introduction from Derrick Gay

About the Course

COVID-19 has highlighted and amplified longstanding access and inclusion inequities. Independent schools are currently grappling with challenges, including equitable access and management issues associated with distant learning; a changing economic landscape and implications for enrollment and financial aid; a rise in anti-Asian disrimination; disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on low income communities and communities of color; and supporting the academic and socioemotional needs of students and families.

More than ever, diversity leadership is an urgent calling – both during and after COVID-19. Independent school enrollment leaders are uniquely positioned to lead schools to foster diverse, equitable, and inclusive school communities.

This online course will provide participants with tools to develop effective diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) Enrollment Management models, messaging, programming, practices, and policies.

Originally designed as an onsite learning opportunity, we have transitioned to a virtual platform.

Structure
The workshop is divided into two synchronous learning opportunities. Day One will focus on introspection, theory, and common language, while Day Two will focus on tactics, strategies, and case study learning to design and achieve DEI outcomes.

The sessions will leverage a hybrid asynchronous / synchronous model to create a dynamic and instructive learning environment. Additionally, participants will have access to the cohort and ongoing learning materials after the program.

Testimonials

"I have served as the primary liaison during Dr. Gay’s consultation with Sesame Workshop over the last four years. His work to support our writers and other creatives to produce programming that advances cultural competency has been incredibly impactful and appreciated by everyone he has worked with. In addition to his deep DEI expertise across a number of sectors, I have particularly appreciated his ability to build capacity both at the individual level, meeting people where they are; as well as offering both short- term pragmatic feedback  and long-term strategic support to advance our mission to help kids  grow smarter, stronger, and kinder."

Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Senior Vice President, Curriculum and Content, Sesame Workshop

"For close to five years, Dr. Gay has led workshops with our board, faculty, parents and students. Most recently, his guidance was instrumental in creating a strategic plan to support the school’s DEI efforts. Throughout, he has adeptly engaged each constituent group, leveraged our Christian mission, and deepened our understanding of ourselves and our broader community. We are grateful for his ongoing and transformative work."

Hart Roper, Head of School, Oak Hill Christian School (Nashville, TN)

"Our understandings of Diversity and Inclusion continue to evolve, which means that we must continue to learn and innovate to remain relevant to best serve all students and families. I have followed Dr. Gay's work during my 22 years working in independent schools. Without fail, I always glean meaningful insights and specific DEI strategies that enhance my work as an enrollment manager."

Frankie Brown, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.)
