Name
Selective Admissions & Diversity: Authentic Practices
Date & Time
Thursday, September 19, 2024, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Description

During this session, we'll explore ways different schools have worked to reconcile the work of welcoming wider communities while maintaining selective admissions practices, effectively seeking to exclude students and the effects these practices have had on the demographics of enrolled families. Some independent schools have managed to build admissions practices that infuse their school's mission authentically while growing the breadth of diversity represented among their families. Through the use of personal reflections, engaging discussion, and the sharing of resources, this session will explore some of those strategies and allow participants to investigate with colleagues aspects of their admissions process that can more richly reflect the mission, allow the necessary selectivity, and mindfully connect with underrepresented communities such that genuine connections are made even when the admissions decision is not favorable. Reconciling this challenge of being both selective and inclusive requires strong coordination among many teams at school to render an effective impact on the community. This session will help begin to weave the many pieces together.
