Reflecting on the lived experiences of students of color in independent schools as it pertains to academic, financial, and mental health support this workshop will explore the gap between expectations set by the admissions process and their reality once they matriculate into their schools. We will examine that gap and how schools can partner with families and CBOs to address the incongruence so that students can experience a stronger sense of inclusion and belonging at their PWIs. We will share strategies and knowledge based on our experiences to help engender better communication, understanding, and intentional support. This includes stronger communication within schools’ administrations and intentional relationship-building with students and families.
