Description

Norwood School, a PK-8th grade school with 450 students in Bethesda, MD, outside of Washington, DC, states in its mission that “The inclusion of diverse perspectives nourishes our common humanity and builds understanding, empathy, and social responsibility.” In our recently completed strategic plan, the School sets the goal of, “… engrain(ing) Norwood’s commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging into the fabric of the community” by “… identif(ing)and creat(ing) additional on ramps to the Norwood community to equitably reflect the diversity of communities in which we serve students and their families.” In our continued quest to reflect the racial and ethnic diversity in the geographic area around Norwood, we have set tactical goals for racial and ethnic diversity based on the current population surrounding the school. We are now using NAIS Market View and other digital tools to be more strategic about our recruitment practices. This includes understanding the racial and ethnic population and income within a 20-minute drive of the School and working on an outreach program to target families in areas where we have not previously targeted advertising and outreach resources. Presentation: In the first 30 minutes, learn about Norwood’s journey to increase our racial and ethnic diversity. During the second 30 minutes, participate in your hands-on activity, creating your own plan.
