Dr. Sarah McMillan has spent over 30 years in education, consulting, and counseling. As an
educator, she has held a number of positions, from classroom teacher to senior administrator.
She has implemented best practices and supervised admissions and college counseling offices
in several independent day and boarding schools in New England. As a developmental and
counseling psychologist, Sarah was a member of the clinical faculty at Boston University, where
she taught courses in child, adolescent, and young adult development, neuro-cognitive and
psychological assessment, and counseling, as well as supervised masters and doctoral-level
students in human development, counseling, instruction and curriculum, and training,
administration and policy. Sarah co-led a research team at Boston University that designed,
studied and supervised school counseling programs designed specifically to meet the needs and
missions of independent schools. Sarah and her husband Don own and run McMillan Education,
a Boston-based educational consultancy of 20 consultants providing guidance in school, college,
and graduate program planning. Sarah and Don’s group also offers expertise in therapeutic and
special needs planning, learning differences, athletic recruiting, and international student
guidance. Along with members of the McMillan Education group, Sarah provides in-service
training of faculty and admission staff at independent schools looking to enhance their
knowledge of screening for students with emotional challenges, and augment their
understanding of and work with students with complex learning and emotional profiles and co-
existing learning differences and anxiety.
