In recent years there has been a proliferation of platforms employed in the recruitment of international students. These include traditional means of communication through emails, phone calls and in-person meetings and newer platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram, Wechat, Youtube, and Zoom meetings. This presentation addresses questions related to the effectiveness of the various communication platforms. Do they all work equally well? Which ones work better than others and why? What interpersonal skills are needed to make effective use of each platform, especially in communicating with families of potential students residing outside the US, who may or may not speak English? Drawing on extensive personal experience and also research studies, this presentation will provide tentative answers to these questions and discuss areas where additional considerations are necessary.
