BIPOC Student Success Begins in Admissions!
Date & Time
Thursday, September 14, 2023, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Description
This session explores the vital role of admissions directors and enrollment managers in supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students' experience in schools. The session will begin by introducing attachment theory in education and how it can be applied to students' emotional attachment to their teachers and peers, sense of belonging, and overall satisfaction with their school experience. Research has shown that higher rates of school attachment result in increased school attendance, better school satisfaction, higher GPAs, and better mental health among students. The presenters will focus on the challenges BIPOC students face in majority White K-12 schools and share a framework to ensure that BIPOC student and community strengths, knowledge, wisdom, and aspirations are recognized within a majority-White school setting. This framework will provide insights into how admissions directors and enrollment managers can support BIPOC students' school attachment by building relationships, creating a sense of community and belonging, and acknowledging their BIPOC student and community’s experiences and perspectives. This session will provide valuable insights and practical strategies for admissions directors and enrollment managers to support BIPOC students' school attachment and create a more inclusive and equitable school environment.
