“Perfectionist. Quiet. Leader.” When it comes to reading admission files, there are external and internal application materials that we use to evaluate a student. What descriptors are we using to sum up a student? How does this language affect our perception and conclusions of a student and how they will fit into our communities? How can we uncover our own biases and make our practices more inclusive? This session will be a reflective and data driven deep dive into the language used in reference letters, interview summaries, and other materials that dichotomize students based on their gender, race, and ethnicity. We will examine trends and explore best practices to name and rewrite the labels imposed on our applicants in order to create a more equitable admission process.
