Last year, we were told that the future of everything is in the metaverse (VR/AR/XR). This year, we saw a similar craze around the promise and peril of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in admissions. Tech hype cycles generate excitement, but they take time to translate into practical tools that help AOs, counselors, and students. Often, the tools of each trend today are very different from the sweeping visions of the future that we hear at TED talks. In this session, we take stock of the metaverse and generative AI crazes and answer the question: what are the current tools and what near-future possibilities for admissions in the metaverse / XR and generative AI? We assess current extended reality (XR) tools and approaches that admissions offices use today, including VR and augmented reality experiences like Snapchat filters or ads that leverage technology similar to Pokemon Go. We explore how admissions offices are using XR to engage prospective students, create more engaging experiences, and exceed enrollment targets. We will also examine the current state of generative AI and how admissions offices can use generative AI in outbound communications to streamline outreach, curate content, and personalize the admissions and college discovery process.
