As an alumna of a predominantly white boarding school in the mountains of Tennessee, I faced many challenges as one of the few students of color. However, I didn't quite understand my Blackness and everything that it stood for until recently in adulthood. Now, I am working at that predominantly white institution (PWI) as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader, while also being one of two people of color on staff. I want to use this time to share my experience building a program that follows everything that I didn't have as a student myself. I'd love to share this vulnerable space with other young/beginning professionals who also find themselves in environments that they struggle in.
