Description
Every application tells a story, but not every story is easy to carry.
In admissions, we often focus on strategy, enrollment goals, and shaping a class. But there’s another side of the work that doesn’t come up as often - the human and emotional side of it.
We meet families in meaningful moments. We read applications that stay with us. And we make decisions knowing they matter, often with limited information and tight timelines. Many of the stories we encounter are shaped by cultural, geographic, and global contexts we may not fully understand in the moment, adding another layer to how we interpret and respond.
This session creates space to talk about that reality in a way that feels honest and practical.
Grounded in day-to-day admissions experience, participants will reflect on how these less visible aspects of the role show up in conversations, decision-making, and team dynamics. Through storytelling and guided discussion, we’ll explore how to stay thoughtful and present in the work while also finding ways to make it sustainable.
The goal is not to overcomplicate what we do, but to better understand it, and to leave with a few ways to navigate it with more clarity and intention.
Participants will:
- Recognize where emotional labor shows up in admissions work
- Identify how institutional priorities intersect with decision-making
- Discuss ways to hold empathy while navigating real constraints
- Develop practical approaches for sustaining themselves in a high-stakes, people-centered role
