Jan Abernathy - The Browning School
Kelly West - The Browning School
Two years ago, The Browning School set out to build something entirely new: KinderFirst, an accelerated program designed for a small cohort of boys ready to complete both Kindergarten and Grade 1 in a single academic year. With no direct model to replicate, the school had to navigate uncharted territory—educationally, operationally, and in the marketplace. This session offers a candid, behind-the-scenes look at how the idea was developed, pressure-tested, and ultimately launched. Attendees will learn how the school aligned key stakeholders (including trustees, learning specialists, and classroom teachers) around a concept that initially felt risky and unconventional. The session will also examine how the admissions and communications teams translated a complex, unfamiliar program into a clear and compelling value proposition for prospective families. Beyond a case study, this session is about the discipline of innovation in schools: how to take responsible risks, build internal confidence, and bring something new to market without a roadmap.
